We could have taken the easy way,
stepped confidently onto firm planks
on a bridge so many have traveled,
but we aimed higher
because our lives werent precarious enough.
Our bodies maneuvered onto the railing,
slim and unprotected. Our feet moved,
one in front of the other, precisely.
A glance down gave me a glimpse of reality,
of the ground below moving out of time with the metal beneath me,
but I continued the ascent into the sky, guided by your laughter.
Those below us began their nervous habits:
I could hear the cranking of knuckles and the quick intakes of breath.
They, still attached to the ground, felt fear.
We felt weightless.
